Causes of ProcrastinationThere are three main causes of procrastination in organized living. Getting rid of clutter requires that you eliminate the attitudes, emotions and excuses that perpetuate a cluttered home. Overcoming procrastination starts with understanding that the procrastination itself is an attempt to avoid confronting some other much larger problem in your life. Chances are that if you procrastinate at getting rid of clutter you are also practicing task avoidance in other areas of your life as well. You can get control of your life and your cluttered home but only if you engage in the decisions and actions that are encessary for organized living instead of delaying them. In reality you are not trapped by your clutter - you are trapped by your inaction. Causes of Procrastination that Prevent You From Achieving Organized LivingYour AttitudeOne of the reasons you may be procrastinating with getting rid of clutter is that you do not actually believe you deserve any better. You have to change your attitude to one where you truly believe that you deserve an environment better than the one you have created for yourself. There are three basic requirements that are necessary in order to achieve success at getting rid of clutter:
In reality you are not trapped by your clutter - you are trapped by your attitude. Emotional InterferenceOne of the main causes of procrastination in organized living is just plain old fear and guilt. You may be afraid to make a decision about what to keep and what to throw away because you are afraid of making the wrong decision. You may be afraid of moving forward with your life. Clutter helps to keep you stuck so as long as there is clutter around you do not have to face an unknown future. If you change something about your life and start getting rid of clutter your life will not be the same. It will be a different life - hopefully it will be clutter free life and a life without clutter is a better life. But in order to move toward a better life you have to say goodbye to the old one. If you are afraid to leave it behind then you may engage in procrastination. Start with this question to yourself "What is the worst thing that can happen if I change what I am doing now?" Your present life is something you know and even if you recognize that it is not the life you want it is more confortable than a life that is an unknown. If you are more afraid of the unknown than you are of your current life, you will delay making changes that allow you to move forward. In reality you are not trapped by your clutter - you are trapped by your emotions. Perceived Lack of TimeLack of time is one of the most frequently cited causes of procrastination when it comes to organized living. "I don't have time to go through the mail every day. If you find yourself saying "I don't have time." as an excuse for not engaging in organized living then you are simply offering excuses. It takes more time to deal with unorganized stuff, a cluttered home, and unorganized kids than it does to prevent it. In reality you are not trapped by your clutter - you are trapped by your excuses. When it comes to organized living, your attitude, emotions, and excuses are the three biggest causes of procrastination.
