Family Chore Charts for Kids
Tips for Kids Chore Charts and How to Use Them

Chore charts for kids are like job descriptions for grownups. Everyone, kids and adults alike, do much better and experience less stress when they know exactly what is expected of them.

In an organized home, chores for kids help the children feel like they are making a contribution to the family team and the kids chore charts provide evidence of their accomplishments.

There are two basic systems for organizing the kids chore charts. Individual charts or family chore charts.

Chore Chart System

Pros and Cons

Individual Chore Charts

This system centers on the individual family member.

Each personalized chore chart lists all the assigned household chores for that person.

This system promotes individual responsibility for assigned chores but does not create a sense of teamwork because only the child's individual chores are listed.

This type of chore chart does not provide a representation of all the work that is necessary to keep the house running smoothly on a daily basis so the child may not develop an appreciation of all the work that has to be done and may instead become interested only in the work that is assigned to him/her.

Family Chore Charts

This system centers on the household chores in general and serves as a master household chores checklist.

All the chores are listed on the master family chore chart. Then someone is assigned to each specific chore.

The system of using family chore charts is more likely to create a sense of team work because all the chores are owned by all family members.

It is a system that lends itself to discussion at family meetings. If the entire family chore chart is available at the meeting chores can be assigned for the upcoming week.

Helps kids to view home and family life as a system.

Both systems work when creating chore charts for kids and it may take a bit of experimenting to find out which one works best for your family. Don't be afraid to experiment.

Tips for using Chore Charts for Kids to Help Create An Organized Home

  • Personalize each kids chore chart. Print it out in black and white and have the child color it to make it their own.

  • Let the child cross off the chores as they are accomplished, or use stickers and stars applied to the chart to indicate completion.

  • For non-readers use purchased stickers (or create them on your computer with clip art).

    • A sticker of a bed reminds the child that they should make the bed before going to school.
    • A sticker of dishes or knives and forks reminds the child to take their used cutlery and dishes to the sink after dinner.
    • A picture of the pet reminds the child to fill the hamster food dish or water bottle.

  • decorate the chore charts as appropriate to the season.

  • Paper chore charts are not indestructible. With this is mind it is a good idea to laminate your kids chore charts. Then you can use a water based pen to write in them and then just wipe them clean with a moist cloth or wet paper towel. One chore chart will last a long time this way. Alternatively you can place each paper chart into a plastic page protector.

  • Instead of just using the chore charts for kids get some for Mom and Dad too! In an organized home everybody pitches it and does their share.

  • Decide which chores are a basic family responsibility and which ones can be used for rewards like tokens or tickets.

  • Use a family communication system like the family meeting to agree on how the tickets or tokens can be redeemed. For example "If everyone has five tickets this month we will go to see a movie."

The system of using chore charts for kids can help to create a organized home because it clearly defines roles and responsibilities for everyone. This makes life more predictable.

Do your family a favour and create some structure and order by using chore charts and checklists to keep track of the chores for kids and grownups too!
