A Walk In Closet Design
Creates Closet Organization

This walk in closet design works because the owner's needs and space were assessed in order to achieve a closet organizer system that worked for their specific closet organization and storage needs.

This photo journal of a closet organization makeover uses the S-P-A-C-E model outlined on the Organizing Your Home S-P-A-C-E section on this website.

The walk in closet had been in use for 27 years without any closet organizer system except for the standard rod and shelf design.

In this before picture you can see the original walk in closet which was just the ordinary rod and shelf brackets along two walls.

Not a lot of closet organization going on here!

The closet was a generous size (almost a full 5' by 8') so there was a lot of unused space.

STRIP

Using the S-P-A-C-E model the closet was first stripped, then cleaned and painted.

Even the popcorn ceiling was painted for the first time in 27 years!

PURGE

Clothing was then purged and the clothing that remained was sorted.

ASSESS and ANALYZE

At this point is was necessary to assess the clothing that was going back in the closet and make descisions about what the owners really wanted in this space and how it was going to be used by them. Since very few clothing items required significant vertical space the closet design was started by doubling up on the space for hanging items and creating more open storage for folded items such as sweaters and t-shirts.

Since the space was generous in size there were a lot of possibilites and graph paper was used to plan the actual placement of the closet organizer system based on the owner's needs.

The owner's list of priorities included:

  • linen storage- the owners wanted to repurpose an existing double closet that was being used for linens and put all the household linens in this space, so more closet storage space was a must.
  • shoe storage - out of the way and convenient shoe storage was requested. The owners did not have a large shoe inventory.
  • wall mounted drawers for folded clothing
  • ironing board - some recent renovations to the house removed the original ironing storage area and the owners wanted to be able to store the ironing board in this closet.
  • all season storage - the owner's did not want to have to take out seasonal items and store elsewhere

CONTAINERIZE

Do it yourself closet organizer systems were assessed at the local big box store in order to determine what the possibilities were and where all the elements of this closet organization system would be placed.
