Household Hints for Organizing Your Home

busy couple greeting each other

In this section of the website, household hints for organizing your home are offered for many of those household processes that can sometimes get out of hand and cause clutter or tension in your busy contemporary life.

It seems everyone is busy all the time.

In fact being busy is the most common reason offered for not attending to decisions and small tasks that can help to keep your life in control and clutter free.

In the household hints section, organizing tips for managing everyday household tasks will be offered so that you really can achieve an organized home and an organized life!

Why do we even need household hints or organizing tips?

Organizing tips in days gone by.........

The middle class is a relatively new social class in the developed world. It is not that far back in history when people had very few material possessions. Storage and organizing was something that was only needed for farming implements, housing and feed for animals, or the food preserves to get through winter. Household hints and organizing tips were passed down from parents to children in a oral tradition since it was expected that children would live a life very similar to their parents, and indeed they did!

Before the emergence of the middle class the only people who had wealth were people who came from a old english mansion family that already had money. These rich people managed busy households and hired staff to maintain the house and the grounds, thus producing valuable employment for many people. Household tasks like cooking and cleaning were done by full time staff, and the rich spent their time organizing the work of others in order to make sure that their family had the resources needed for daily life.

During these times when there were only the rich and poor in a society it is quite likely that the only written information on household hints for organizing your home was in books used in finishing schools for girls from wealthy families!

printing press

It all started to change when the printing press was invented.

Books made it easier for the poor to obtain knowledge (once they learned to read) and knowledge led to the ability to earn more money.

Money led to the ability to own property and owning property allowed people to accumulate wealth.

Wealth was no longer something that had to be inherited, it could now be created! It was this ability to establish wealth that created the middle class and along with that wealth came busy lives and clutter!

Of course the wealth created by the middle class was not usually substantial wealth and although it allowed the accumulation of material goods it was not enough wealth to live the life of the rich and famous. There was simply not enough money to pay for a household staff to take care of household chores and over time the busy household of today emerged.

The modern contemporary family tries to manage this busy lifestyle with no role models, no household hints, and no organizing tips passed down from parents (very few that work anyway).

The modern contemporary family is searching for information relevant to their lifestyle and circumstances and this is precisely why there is an explosion in the last century of housekeeping magazines and information resources on organizing your home.

You do it all.............and you are making it up as you go along because the contemporary family in the modern developed world has simply never existed before!

multitasking and juggling life tasks
  • You do your own laundry and even your own ironing - See these tips to organize laundry day with the entire family
  • You prepare, cook, and clean up from making your own meals.
  • You do your own dishes
  • You provide your own child care
  • You take care of your own yard and gardens
  • You work at jobs outside the home.....sometimes more than one!
  • You provide your own transportation to the appointments you make yourself.
  • You ensure that your transportation vehicles are reliable and in a state of good repair.
  • You manage your own correspondence and communications (e-mail and telephone) with teachers, government, banks, schools.....and?

Let's face it modern families are busy, and busy lives require planning to establish systems in order to maintain control, and the real purpose of organized living is to establish control so life is more predictable.

You need help - so we called in an expert!

Meet our expert.

household hints

Dianne has spent many years of her adult life as a housekeeping expert.

She owned her own business providing housekeeping and laundry services to private chalet clients and she has worked as an executive housekeeper with a large resort hotel in a federal park in Canada.

Today she is manager of the housekeeping department at a large sports and event stadium in one of the largest cities in Canada.

Now if anybody knows anything about housekeeping Dianne does!

In an average day at the hotel resort she supervised 20-24 housekeeping staff who worked to maintain 71 chalets and 24 standard hotel rooms. Everyday they processed 480 lbs of laundry which went up to 800 lbs during busy season. (And you think you got the endless laundry blues?)

Now that's an expert!

Dianne has welcomed the opportunity to share her expert knowledge with you here at www.organization-makes-sense.com, and shares household hints and organizing tips she has learned through her 10 years of experience as an executive housekeeper.

You will love the video where she demonstrates how to fold laundry , and just like the true expert that she is, Dianne even provides suggestions for how and when not to fold laundry!
