Before the emergence of the middle class the only people who had wealth were people who came from a family that already had money. Household tasks like cooking and cleaning were done by full time staff, and the rich spent their time organizing the work of others in order to make sure that their family had the resources needed for daily life.

It all started to change when the printing press was invented.
