Personal Organization Habits
You actually have to start the process of closet organizing long before you ever get to your closet! Closet organization comes mostly from your own personal habits and the way you manage your wardrobe than it does from organizing products or custom closet installations. There is a lot you can do yourself to make sure that the stuff in your closet remains manageable and accessible for your use when you want it.
Standardize
Probably the best closet organizing idea is to standardize your shopping habits. What do I mean by standardizing?
It is quite simple really - if you find an item of clothing that works really well for you then buy more than one! Replace your supply annually by throwing out the ones you have and getting new ones.
If you can standardize your selection of underwear, bras, socks, and hosiery then you have reduced your shopping trips for these items to once per year (shop online if possible and you do not even have to leave the house!) AND you have saved your self the time and frustration of going to the store and trying on several bras only to find out that they do not have the size and color you want so you have to move to another store - how trying is that! Here's how to organize a closet using standardized shopping habits
You know that favourite bra that fits really well and you always select that one to wear while the others remain safely tucked in the drawer?
Why fight it? You love that bra so buy as many as you need for the entire week and get rid of everything else.
Record the make and style number and every year replace your current supply with new ones.
The same goes for socks and underwear. It doesn't make much sense to buy a single pair of socks or underpants or panty hose does it? Actually it is quite a waste of gas and time.
Instead economize on those precious resources and when you are at the store purchase as many as you need to last an entire week without doing a wash. A clean pair will always be there when you get dressed in the morning.
Store them in storage baskets or use drawer organizers. If all your socks are the same you do not need to even fold or pair them up. They go straight from drier to drawer!
Now That Makes Sense!
Efficient Use of Closet Space
So if you standardize your shopping and get enough socks, bras, and underwear to last an entire week what do you do with them in the space that you have?
Here are some tips for how to organize a closet that will keep all your stuff sorted, contained and at the ready.
- use a 5 day closet organizer - this will help you to prepare your wardrobe items for each day of your work week.
- use special closet organizing products for your accessories:
- fold your t-shirts instead of hanging them and stack them on vertical shelves made with storage cubes or modular bedroom closet organizers.
- in your horizontal hanging space keep the items you wear most frequently in the middle where they are most accessible.
- for vertical storage put those frequently accessed items right at chest level.
- rotate your clothing seasonally. Unless you have a good amount of space you may not be able to keep everything in the closet so take out those clothing items that are not in season and store them away. Empty luggage makes a good container for out of season clothing - you are just storing air in there anyway! Or use an underbed storage container for out of season clothing.
- sort your clothing using "like with like" criteria and store them that way. All blouses together, all jackets together, all pants together. Group each clothing set in a subset of like colors.
- use a pant hanging trolley instead of pant hangers. Place it on the floor under your blouses for better use of space.
- double your hanging space for shorter items and you can get twice as much stuff hanging in there!
Remember - closet organizing products are really not the complete answer to how to organize a closet. They only provide a place to put everything. You are the answer to making sure that everything finds its place!
