Ironing Tips for an Organized Home

Ironing Tips are offered to help your ironing tasks go as smoothly and efficiently as possible.

Thankfully ironing is not as tedious today as in days gone by. The number of items in the average wardrobe that need ironing has been significantly reduced by technology.

Many fabrics are now wrinkle resistant because of the use of polyester in fabric blends. Steam irons now eliminate the need to dampen clothing in advance of ironing.

Because of these technological advances ironing has become somewhat of a lost art.

Gone are the days when ironing was an all day chore and home-ec lessons taught how to get the perfect crease in a pair of trousers! Nowadays people simply iron a garment as needed before wearing it.

As with any task using the right tools and equipment in the right way will bring the best results.

Ironing Tips

  • Set up the ironing center in your bedroom. That is where all the clothes that need ironing come from anyway!

  • Start your ironing with clothes that need the coolest temperature then proceed to increase to clothes made of fabrics that need the higher temperatures.

  • Keep the iron moving- leaving the iron in one place for too long will cause burning

  • Use a rolled up towel inside a shirt sleeve to assist with a wrinkle free finish

  • Allow the clothing you have just ironed, to cool completely before wearing

  • Use an ironing board cover that is a natural fabric and keep it clean. After laundering put the ironing board cover on the ironing board while it is still slightly damp and let it dry in place.

  • pad your ironing board with old wool blankets cut to fit.

  • keep a spray bottle with your ironing supplies so that you can spray any stubborn wrinkles.

Follow Care Label Instructions

Of all the ironing tips to be offered the best one is to know and follow the instructions on the care label. The symbol of the iron on the care label indicates whether or not the garment should be ironed and the heat temperature that should be used for the fabric. The heat temperature is represented by dots. The more dots the higher the recommended heat.

You can view the care label symbols for ironing here.

In general you will find that natural plant fibres require a higher heat that polyester fibres or blends. Polyester fibres are made from oil so they will melt at high temperatures.

A general guide for ironing temperatures would be:

heat
symbol
fabric
high 3 dots cotton and linens
medium 2 dots cotton and polyester blends
low 1 dot silk, nylon, and polyester

  • folding - a table top model or a wall mount that folds down. Both are easily stored in a small amount of space.
