Organize it - Here are some organizing tips if you cannot seem to get started or don't know where to start when organizing your home. Sometimes you need help to get started with organized living. These ideas can help you get going, get purging, and get organized.

Perhaps you are so overwhelmed that you don't know where to start, or the prospect of tackling an overflowing closet or a gargantuan garage just seems too much.

You may be procrastinating with organizing your home because you just cannot figure out where to start.

Organizing Tips for the Overwhelmed

organizing tips The whole process to organize it might seem mysterious and overwhelming but it doesn't have to be. Organized living is achievable when you understand how to:

Schedule it:

You must put aside the time for organizing your home. Pick the area you want to start with and if you are completely overwhelmed start with a short period of time like one hour. During this hour you commit to organize it!

This commitment will get you started. Schedule the time period and write it on your calendar.

Organized living doesn't happen by accident you have to work at it, so make the time you need to organize it a priority!

Sort It:

It is time to get started. You will need to set up two boxes or bags and label them TOSS and KEEP.

In the room you have decided to organize just get started - anywhere. The important thing is to start and break through the procrastination barrier.

So just pick up stuff and start sorting.

Toss Keep
Into the TOSS box you will put any item that:
  • you have not used in the last year

  • does not contribute to a meaningful life

  • is broken, worn out, tattered, or unusable
A few rules for the KEEP box:
  • this item is used regularly

  • sentimental value is attached AND something can be done to preserve, protect, and display the treasured item

Share It:

If you find yourself having difficulty sorting try getting a friend to help you. Tossing items may be difficult if you are making decisions emotionally instead of logically.

When you pick up each item in the room you reconnect to that item so instead of handling each item yourself, have a friend pick up each item and ask you for the toss/keep decision.

How To Organize a Closet

Time It:

Set a specified amount of time for each toss/keep decision.

15 seconds is recommended.

You will appraise each item based on the toss/keep criteria and within the first 15 seconds of that item appraisal you should be able to decide whether to toss it or keep it. If you have a friend helping you let them use a stop watch if necessary but keep to the time limit.

If you are using 15 seconds for each toss/keep decision that is 240 decisions in one hour--you can get through a lot of stuff in one hour!

Now that you have made all the toss/keep decisions and the room has been stripped you can start the planning process for placing the Keep pile back into your space.
