Organizing Your Home S-P-A-C-E
How to Get Organized in Any Room
Organizing your home SPACE is easy.
The S-P-A-C-E model provides an easy reminder for how to get organized in every room of the house.
Use the OMS S-P-A-C-E model
You will need:
....and maybe even a few well placed storage baskets to get it all pulled together.
In fact the list of things you need for organizing your home and all the stuff in it could be a lengthy one.(See the ABC's of Home Storage Ideas for 26 ideas for home storage.)
However, none of it will be
of any use to you if it does not suit your needs. The S-P-A-C-E model provides a systematic way for you to get started one room at a time
when organizing your home.
"Organizing is what you do before you do something, so that when you do it,
it is not all mixed up."
Actually Pooh didn't get it quite right......it is planning that must be
done before you do "something".
Nobody ever plans to fail...people just fail to plan.
Even the task of organizing your home requires planning.
So don't get mixed up! Here is how you can organize your home room by room.
How to Organize Your Home
Before you try to organize it, store it, or
otherwise contain it, take the time to make a plan using the systematic process that you can remember
by using the mnemonic S-P-A-C-E.
- Get everything
out of the room.
- Strip it right down to the bare bones.
- This is great time to clean and get into all the nooks and crannies.
- Also a great opportunity to paint!
Go through everything that you took out
of the room and decide if you toss or keep it.
Assess and analyze your needs
Q- How to organize your home?
A - Understand your own space limitations. You cannot have everything in the finite space that you have!
You might want a 60" television but will it actually fit in you home?
Of all the organization tips to be offered, the best one is to ask the right questions!
- How many lineal meters (feet) of storage do you have?
- What are the dimensions of the objects that you intend to store or place in the room?
- What are your absolute priorities? There is no sense creating a new space design if your needs are not met.
- What are you planning to put in the room?
- What activities will take place in this room?
- What items need to be stored here so they can be used and enjoyed in this space?
- What kind of storage will best meet your needs?
Based on your assessment you should now have some storage ideas for the room and what
kind of storage or containers you need for the room.
Now is the time to go out shopping with a list!
Enjoy and then evaluate.
You will find out over time if your new space is working to create more of the life you want.
