It has long been recognized in the business world that a good understanding of how all the different parts of a business work together to achieve a desired outcome is the best way to improve efficiency and reduce waste and errors. A business is called an organization for a reason. If you are seeking to improve your personal organization abilities you can learn from what the business world has known for some time and that is: Planning is essential to organized living.

| What is organizing? | |
| Organizing is... | Organizing is not... |
organize - to arrange things in a cohesive way so that relationships between items are clear and apparent. To create systems that make life easier and more predictable. |
|
So organizing is really more about creating systems and seeing the relationships between things which is precisely why sorting and categorizing is an essential skill for organizing.
This ability to see relationships is essential to organizing your life because everything you do has a consequence that creates the life you have.
In contrast to organizing, planning has more to do with strategizing and sequencing steps in a logical order. Planning requires the ability to visualize the desired results and reasonably predict the results of specific actions.
| What is planning? | |
planning - the cognitive and collaborative processes of creating the steps to achieve a desired outcome. |
|
Both planning and organizing have a future time orientation because they are processes that are oriented towards creating something for the future.
When you say you are going to do something you are not planning.
When you say "I am going to iron my shirt." it might sound like a plan but it is not planning!
As Winston Churchill said:
So your plan to iron the shirt is of little importance but planning to iron the shirt by:
- selecting an appropriate time
- making sure you have all the equipment and it is in working order
- ensuring you can complete the task by the appropriate deadline
... is essential!
Otherwise your shirt will stay wrinkled!
| What is organized living? | What organized living is not.... |
|
organized living - a systematic and controlled way of living that involves understanding how to achieve consistent and predictable outcomes in life's everyday processes. |
