Over the Door Ironing Board

An over the door ironing board is a compact ironing board that you store on the door. Just pull down the ironing board and you can iron.

Organizing tips for this type of ironing board are to make sure that the placement of the door does not force you to iron with your non-dominant hand.

This type of ironing board acts like a built in but travels like a portable. Don't forget to take it with you when you move.

Short of space? There is lots of storage space on the back of the door in every room.

These ironing boards are not just stored on the door. You use it right there! It works so well you will hug yourself! And so cheap that you can put one in every room.

It is a lot easier to take the iron from room to room that it is to lug the ironing board around!

Two models pictured here even have a built in stand for the iron so you don't even have to do that!

Now that Makes Sense!

Although this type of pull down ironing board can make great use of space it won't work in just any space so here are some organizing tips to help you plan where to put your over the door ironing board.

  • you must have an electrical outlet nearby. This seems obvious but these are the things you sometimes don't think about. Who wants to give up the ironing board hustle only to replace with the extension cord hustle?

  • You must have space around the ironing board once it is pulled down.

  • If you are right handed you will want the narrow end of the ironing board on your left side. Pick a door that will allow you to get access to the ironing board when it is folded down.

  • Only iron when the door is closed. Your ironing board will be much more stable that way.

My Over the Door Ironing Board

By the time I got everything in my new sewing room (cutting table and all) there was no room to put the ironing board. There wasn't even any wall space left to mount the ironing board holder!

You can see how I solved the problem in the pictures.

This is the ironing board as it hangs on the door. It is out of the way.

When I need to iron a newly sewn seam, I pull down the ironing board and plug in my iron and go. You can see the narrow end of the board is on my left as I am right handed.
