Priority Health Concerns Related to Clutter

Priority health problems of those who live with clutter can be directly related to the poor air quality of the environment. As clutter develops it becomes increasingly difficult to do regular home maintenance activities like vacuuming and dusting. In chronic hoarding situations this can can go on for many years.

If there is moisture in the environment paper clutter can bring with it the risk of mould and fungus. Moisture can come from anywhere including water vapors from cooking, spilled liquids, and pets. Paper is a excellent medium for the growth of mould and fungus so paper clutter is especially bad for contributing to the poor air quality in a home.

Dust exposure can lead to allergy induced asthma and can trigger the development of other allergies in the household environment as well. Is it any wonder that respiratory symptoms and allergy induced asthma are associated with clutter? If the allergy causing dust, insects, and moulds in the environment persist they can cause allergy induced asthma. Asthma should always be considered a priority health concern.

Asthma is characterized by four main symptoms:

  • Wheezing
  • chest tightness
  • feeling short of breath
  • coughing

.........and look at these statistics:
  • 60% of people with asthma test positive to cockroach allergens
  • asthmatic children who are allergic to cockroaches are 3 times more likely to be hospitalized for asthma if they have significant exposure to large cockroach populations in their environment.

Look at the common allergies and symptoms that can be associated with clutter. Most are caused by insects such as dust mites and cockroaches that love to live in the clutter! These creatures eat and eliminate as all living creatures do. It is often the feces of the dust mites or cockroaches that stimulate the allergic response and both can cause allergy induced asthma!
