Storage Ideas for an Organized Home

storage_ideas

There are many storage ideas for for an organized home. In fact there are so many kinds and varieties of home storage solutions that retail stores now have entire departments for "storage containers". Some stores are even devoted entirely to selling containers to put stuff in!

Considering the amount of stuff in the average contemporary home the "home storage solutions" niche is a good market!

Home Storage Solutions

There are home storage solutions that can use both the horizontal and vertical spaces in your home. Add to that the different types of storage that are open or closed and you will be able to generate a wide variety of home storage ideas for your stuff.

horizontal vs vertical

Have you ever noticed how every horizontal surface in your home becomes a landing spot for homeless items? This is because humans are most comfortable placing and retrieving items from elevations that are approximately at waist height. Every horizontal surface at that height is a human comfort zone for both storing and retrieving needed items. This is why your desk, counter, and table tops are difficult to keep clear.

Of course the biggest horizontal surface area in any home is the floor! Without a horizontal surface at waist height the natural human inclination is to let it drop to the floor. Children are particularly good at this and will comfortably let their coats fall to the floor because that is the nearest surface available to them.

Utilizing vertical space is the most basic home storage solution for preventing clutter on horizontal surfaces. Of course you want to get stuff off the floor, but there is one floor space in most homes that is under used....under the bed!

Vertical space storage ideas Horizontal space storage ideas
  • wall mounted shelving or cupboards

  • free standing shelf towers, bookcases, or cupboards

  • hanging storage using hooks or Velcro

  • wall mounted "slat board" systems

Look under the bed!
  • Space under the bed is wasted if you are not using it for storage. There are many storage containers that are specifically designed to roll under beds!

  • If your bed is not quite high enough you can purchase "bed risers" to go under the legs of your bed and this will give a few more centimeters of vertical space so you can use the horizontal space efficiently!

  • There are also adjustable bed casters that can also accomplish this same purpose. You will get an extra 6 or 7 cm at least!

  • Under bed storage is especially useful for storing items that are used only seasonally or are not accessed frequently. A great place for Christmas decorations or gift wrap

Humans are creatures of habit! Personal organization requires good habits that are developed over time. These habits help maintain organized living.

Added to that is the benefit that always placing an item in the same place prevents stuff from piling up on horizontal surfaces or becoming homeless clutter.

"How Not to Organize Your Home". If you follow these guidelines you can be sure to avoid an organized home!

Do You Need Open or Closed Storage Ideas?

Home storage solutions classed as open storage are particularly useful for people who are very visual and must be able to see an item in order to know where it is stored.

A visual person who uses a closed storage system will be more likely to purchase duplicate items as they will have forgotten that the original exists. For people who are very visual out of sight is out of mind!

Open storage does have the disadvantage of being completely visible so even your new shelves can start to look unorganized if they are not kept tidy.

For people who do not need their stuff to be in open view, closed storage in the form of cupboards or storage containers would be a better choice. Just be sure to label so that you know what is in there.

Another option is to use clear storage containers. With this option you have the benefit of closed storage, but you can see what is in there!

We are literally running out of room!

Contemporary family homes are now larger than they have ever been throughout history, and still there seems to be a shortage of space to store all the stuff that a family can accumulate. Good evidence of this is the growing industry of public storage businesses.

Now you can not only buy all kinds of different storage containers to put your stuff in but when you get too many of those you can rent a public storage space and keep your storage containers in there!
