A telemarketing do not call list is the result of telemarketing laws written to provide consumers with the ability to stop telemarketing calls to their home.

Outsourced commercial telemarketers are generally required to subscribe to the telemarketing no call list in the country they are calling to.

If you live in a country that has passed telemarketing laws then your then you can use the do not call list to regain some control over your life.

Putting yourself on the telemarketing no call list means that commercial for profit companies cannot call you.

It does not however, stop telemarketing calls completely. Some countries have exemptions for charities. You may have even given permission for a company to call you when you signed up for a credit card or a company promotion of some sort.

Unwanted and unsolicited telephone calls over which you have no control can be categorized as clutter!

Organizations that are not required to subscribe to the DNC List include charitable and not for profit organizations. If you want to stop solicitation calls from these organizations try this three step process:

1. Ask the caller for their name and the name of the organization.


2. Ask them how to spell it (this ensures they know you are writing it down)


3. Say the person's name (that makes it personal) and then calmly and politely say...


"Take my name off your call list and do not call again."

If you have consumer legislation in place in your country that requires these companies to follow your instructions then this should remove your name from the telemarketing list.

If they put up any kind of argument say it again followed by:

"If you call me again I will report your company for telephone harassment."

Hopefully it will not get to that point.

Telemarketing laws in Canada

Canada has a national telemarketing Do Not Call List (DNCL). Telemarketers are required by law to subscribe to the National DNCL and to regularly download the updates to the list.

Telemarketing companies must ensure they do not call any numbers on the telemarketing no call list.

This law applies to any company making calls to Canadian numbers. Even if they are calling from outside of Canada they are still required to subscribe to the DNCL.

In Canada charitable, not for profit telemarketers, are required to remove your name from the telemarketing call list if you specifically request it.

You have the right to be able to focus on your family life in your own home, without the constant interruption of the telephone, no matter who is calling.

With your efforts to register for the telemarketing do not call list and specific requests to charitable companies to stop telemarketing calls you should notice a signficant decline in the number of telemarketing calls and get back to having uninterrupted family dinners again!

It is you who should be in control of your telephone time NOT the telemarketing companies!
